Creating a classroom

Returning to North Devon!

When my husband, daughter and I came back from our travels due to Covid in March 2020, we had no real plan of what we were going to do. Fortunately, when we lived in Germany, we bought a house and had been renting it out for a few years. We then decided due to the Covid situation that it would be the best plan to actually move into our house in North Devon, so a few months later that’s exactly what we did!

The idea starts to come to life

Next began the decorating of the house and setting it up ready to use as a childcare premises. Once my tutoring had become more established, I decided it would be great to have a separate space to use as a classroom. The old summer house at the bottom of the garden seemed like the best option so we had a vague plan to have it done out so it could be fit for purpose.

The summer house when we first moved in

It was around summer 2020 when some close friends came to visit us from Germany. One of them mentioned that their brother would probably be able to do the work for us, so we contacted him and he was very happy to help. He had a fabulous idea that I could pay for his work in tuition for his daughter!

Once all the cladding had been removed

During the time of replacing the roof and removing the cladding, our friend was also very busy insulating the inside and making an internal wooden frame which we lined with plywood sheets. I then filled in all the gaps and painted it white.

We then painted the cement floor with a heavy-duty paint:

I placed black rubber mats that interlocked all over the floor to make it a bit more comfortable underfoot. A waterproof rug from IKEA went on top of that. I decided I wanted beanbags instead of tables initially so set them out like so on the floor with a rug.
Next we had the outside plastered!
Then it was ready for some home-school lessons!
Of course, it had to be orange.
This is me celebrating the completion of the classroom! I got very ‘orange paint happy’ as you can probably tell, and ended up painting the wall of our downstairs toilet bright orange too.

Home school groups

As of March 2022, I have three marvellous home school groups in the classroom each week. Click the link if you are interested in these sessions, and I can give you more information!

I’ve had a busy day today, revamping and reorganising the space. I found that having a table up permanently was actually really useful, and makes it easier to have the five pupils split down into smaller groups so I can support everyone in the optimum way. It’s also handy for English lessons too!
