Sound Pals: A Simple Resource for Phonics Teaching

I designed these flashcards, brought to life by Hazel Narbett (illustrator of the B0B series) , mainly because I couldn’t find anything on the market that was decent enough to teach phonics effectively and in a fun way. I was inspired whilst working on my Level 5 and Level 7 dyslexia qualification, to create something that targeted both reading and spelling. After two years of conjuring up this idea, trialling and tweaking it, we have an awesome set of flashcards aimed at parents and also tutors or teachers.

If you are a parent wondering how you can support your child with reading and spelling at home, this is a simple and effective way to help. This deck contains 24 cards, aimed to support mastery of the Phase 3 sounds; both in reading them and spelling them. Over time, with repeated exposure to the cards, your child will learn to associate the name of the character with the drawing of the character, learning the sound by sight in the process.

My daughter demonstrates this in the following video (she memorised all of these after 20 minutes, no exaggeration).

You can then build this up to them being able to say the sentence too. This helps with a child developing their understanding of the sounds, and where in a word the sound can come.

Here is a bit more of an explanation of the components of the flashcards:

If you are a tutor, and you are looking for a fun way to implement phonics teaching, the possibilities are endless. A few tutors have purchased a pack already and I can’t wait to hear the feedback and see how you use them!

If anyone has any questions about them, do leave a comment!
